New York officials released new details about an unidentified murder victim found on Gilgo Beach and called upon the public for help on Monday.
Law enforcement found 11 bodies near Gilgo Beach while searching for missing sex worker Shannan Gilbert. Rex Heuermann has been charged with six of those murders committed between 1993 and 2011.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney provided a detailed description of an unidentified Asian victim, known as “Asian Doe” during a press conference.
“This is a call to action. We want to enlist the public’s help in trying to identify ‘Asian Doe,'” Tierney said.
The body of the unidentified Asian person was found in 2011. The victim was a biological male, but they were wearing women’s clothing.
“It is possible that they identified as a woman, or were known by others as being a woman,” Tierney said.
Clothing worn by the victim has been identified as a Chrysantheme brand blue ribbed short-sleeve shirt with crew neck, a Rafaella brand shirt and Bill Blass brand pants and bra.
Tierney said the victim died from blunt-force trauma. Tierney described the incident as “a violent assault” resulting in death.
The victim was between the ages of 17 and 23 and was around 5-foot-3 to 5-foot-9.
Tierney said the victim may have been a sex worker.
The death occurred at least five years prior to April 4, 2011.
Tierney identified the victim as likely being from Han Chinese descent.
“Unfortunately, South Asia is underrepresented in our genealogy databases, meaning there are not a lot of Asian profiles in the database,” Tierney said. “Therefore, investigative genetic genealogy, in this instance, is a challenge.”
Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS, or via email or mobile app at https://suffolkpd.org/Alerts/Crime-Stoppers. Tips can be submitted in an individual’s native language and translators are available. A reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information leading to the identification of “Asian Doe.”
“This person had a name. This person had family. This person had friends,” Tierney said. “We’re reaching out to anyone who might have known this individual to help us with that identification.”
A suspect in this death has not been identified yet.
Heuermann, 61, was initially charged with murder in the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes and Amber Costello, collectively known as the “Gilgo Four.”
Heuermann received additional charges in the killings of Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla in June.
Officials also disclosed new details of their investigation in June, including a planning document. Prosecutors claimed that the document is a “blue print” that describes Heuermann’s “intent and methodology.”
“This was a significant investigative finding,” Tierney said.
The document was recovered from a device found at his home in Massapequa Park. Officials have recovered a large amount of technology from the residence, including 15 cameras, 27 computers, 46 cell phones and over 30 hard drives.
Tierney said investigators were looking into additional victims after Heuermann was charged in the deaths of Taylor and Costilla.
“The investigation continues,” Tierney said. “That investigation has been expanded, both to the bodies that have been found on Gilgo and beyond.”
Heuermann is being held without bail in Suffolk County Jail in Riverhead. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
His next court appearance is scheduled for October 16. A date for the trial has not been set yet.
